How to clean up your bookmarks bar

By Sam Wilson. Last updated August 1, 2026.

When your bookmarks bar is packed edge to edge, you do not need a grand system. You need a rescue. This is a fast triage pass in four steps: delete what you never open, shrink the names of what you keep, fold the rarely used links into folders, and mark the groups that are left. Set aside a few minutes, and your bar comes out readable again.

1. Delete what you never open

Be honest with yourself here. Dead links, old projects, pages you saved to read and never did. Right click each one and choose Delete, or clear out a batch at once: press Ctrl + Shift + O (Cmd + Option + B on a Mac) to open the bookmark manager, select the lot, and delete them together. The full steps are in how to delete bookmarks.

2. Shrink the names

Long bookmark names are the biggest space waster on the bar. Right click a bookmark, choose Edit, and cut the name to a word or two. For sites with a logo you recognize, clear the name completely, so only the favicon shows. Each one you shrink makes room for another. See how to edit and rename bookmarks for the details.

3. Fold the rest into folders

Some links earn a place on the bar, and some just need a home. Keep your daily links visible, and move the rest into a folder or two: right click an empty part of the bar, choose Add folder, and drag them in. Archives, reference lists, and someday reading all belong here. How to use bookmark folders covers folders in depth, including labeled separators inside them.

If the bar is too far gone for a quick sort, start fresh instead. Open the bookmark manager and move everything into one folder, or the All Bookmarks folder. Then pull out the ones that matter, drag each into the right place, and add a separator to bring the bar together into clear, organized sections. Create new folders along the way for anything that deserves its own group.

4. Mark the groups

With the clutter gone, give what is left some structure. Slide related links next to each other, then drop a separator at the start of each group, or a Diviide Space Separator for a gap with no line. Now your bar reads as sections, not one long row. How to use Diviide shows you how to make your first separator in a few seconds.

Keep it clean

The trick is not the big clean up, it is the small habits after it. Save new bookmarks into the right group as you go, and give the bar a two minute prune once a month. When you are ready to go beyond cleaning and build a lasting setup, with grouping, naming, and a color code, see how to organize bookmarks in Chrome.

Common questions

How do I clean up my bookmarks bar?
Delete the bookmarks you never open, shorten or remove the names of the ones you keep, move rarely used links into folders, and put a separator at the start of each group. The whole pass takes a few minutes.
How do I delete lots of bookmarks at once?
Open the bookmark manager with Ctrl + Shift + O (Cmd + Option + B on a Mac), select the bookmarks you want to remove, and delete them together. It is much faster than right clicking them one by one.
Should I use folders or separators?
Both, for different jobs. Folders hide rarely used links behind one click. Separators keep your daily links visible and split them into groups you can spot at a glance.
