How to use bookmark folders

A bookmark folder groups links inside one button on your bar. Click it and the links drop down in a list. Folders save space, but they show your bookmarks in a different way from the bar. Here is how to use them, and how separators fit in.

Create a folder

Right click an empty part of the bookmarks bar. Choose Add folder. Give it a name. Then drag bookmarks into it to fill it up.

You can also leave the name blank. A folder with no name shows as just its icon, with no text beside it, so it takes up almost no room on the bar. That is handy when space is tight and you already know the icon. It still opens to a list like any other folder. A few unnamed folders in a row can even act as light breaks between groups, though for a clear divider a separator does the job better.

Safari and Firefox have folders on the bar too. In Firefox, right-click the Bookmarks Toolbar and choose New Folder. In Safari, open the Bookmarks menu, then Edit Bookmarks, and add a New Folder. Fill a folder from your open tabs

Got a window full of tabs you want to keep? You do not have to save them one at a time. Right click any tab and choose Bookmark all tabs, or press Ctrl + Shift + D (Cmd + Shift + D on a Mac). Chrome scoops up every open tab in that window and drops them into one new folder. Give it a name, pick where it goes, and you are done.

Folders show links vertically

This is the key difference. On the bar, bookmarks sit side by side, left to right. Inside a folder, they stack top to bottom in a list. So a folder reads like a menu, not a row. Keep that in mind when you plan your layout.

When to use a folder

One thing you cannot do is change a folder's color. Chrome tints every folder icon with a single shade from your theme, so all folders look the same. Separators inside a folder

You can use separators inside a folder too. But a folder is a vertical list that shows text, so a plain icon is easy to miss. Here it helps to give the separator a label. Diviide adds it for you. In the sidebar, open the Label section, turn on Include label, and type your text. Then drag the separator in. It arrives with the label already on it, so it reads like a heading in the list. Break a folder into categories

This is where a separator earns its place. Put a labeled separator at the top of each group inside the folder. The folder then splits into clear categories. A long list becomes a few short ones, so your eye lands on the right section first.

Say you keep a Work folder. Turn on Include label in the Label section, type your text, and drag a separator in for each section:

• Daily, then your everyday links.
• Projects, then the work you are on now.
• Reference, then docs you check now and then.
